The Miracle of Birth

This morning in the early morning quiet I cuddled with my new born granddaughter while the rest of the household slept and I wondered again at the incredible miracle of birth. Almighty God in His infinite wisdom decreed that the union of one man and one woman would produce the offspring needed to populate the world. From that beginning in Genesis 4, thousands of years ago, down to this present new birth in my arms that decree has held true with one notable exception . . . Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate at this time of the year.

The little bundle of joy with which I was snuggling is the most recent of our twelve grandchildren. Each of the others brought the same sense of amazement, awe, and wonder as little Audrey. However, because this is the Christmas season, my thoughts were taken to the reality that my Savior was once a little babe like this. Jesus Christ, God with us, once snuggled for warmth and comfort with Joseph as Mary got the rest she needed. Jesus Christ, God with us, once nursed at His mother’s breast. Jesus Christ, God with us, once relied on Mary and Joseph to supply His every need. Jesus Christ, God with us, was a helpless baby the size of the babe in my arms! My mind cannot comprehend the significance of that truth!

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Is 9:6–7)

I imagined that Mary and Joseph contemplated what the future would hold for their new Son. I, too, wonder what the future holds for little Audrey as well as all my grandchildren. My prayer for them is that they will accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and that they will walk in obedience to Him where ever He may lead them.

The miracle of birth, God with us!
